The site located in Askanischer Platz, in Berlin district of Kreuzberg. It was the forecourt of the former Anhalter Bahnhof. However, for what was glorious has no longer glory now. The surroundings are flourished with hotels and residential. Besides tourists and office workers, this area has the highest population of immigrants in Berlin.
As lack of public building and densification is the problem of the site, my design proposal aims to inject new group of community by introducing an art cultural hub. It will be a house for contemporary art, cinematography and performing art. This will be a place for exhibition & events, networking, and education. Art becomes the magnet brings people together.
There are three different situations of spatial usage in the event hall. When there is no event, this event hall will act as an alternative path to the floor above or with the levelling, it becomes an informal meeting space, looking out to Anhalter Bahnhof. When there is event, with door opened, it provides a 360 degree of view. With the door closed, it is a proper event hall. Visitor can use the staircase next to the café to go to the floor above. The double volume café is placed at first floor as a viewing point to the city as well and waiting spaces before entering the event hall during a black box performance.
